Designing the Future on Purpose: AI4ALL Mentor Marion Mulder on Conscious Innovation

When people talk about the future of AI, it often sounds inevitable, as if technology simply moves forward and the rest of us try to keep up. Marion Mulder sees it differently.

“A lot of people assume there is only one future,” she says. “Usually, the one that looks like a straight line from the past. But that’s rarely true.”

As a futurist and innovation strategist and a mentor in the AI4ALL Mentor Program, Marion spends her time helping professionals challenge that assumption. Instead of reacting to technology as it unfolds, she encourages people to pause, zoom out, and design the future they actually want to create.

In a world where AI is evolving faster than many feel prepared for, that shift in mindset can be transformative. Responsible AI begins with people who choose to shape it with intention.

Reframing the future: from reaction to intention

Much of Marion’s work sits at the intersection of strategic foresight, design thinking, and responsible innovation. Rather than chasing every new AI tool or trend, she helps individuals and organizations step back and think more deliberately about where they are going.

One of the first ideas she introduces is surprisingly simple: there isn’t just one future.

“There are multiple possible futures,” she explains. “Some are probable, some are assumed, and some might even sound preposterous. But the one that matters most is the desirable future.”

Through scenario planning, Marion helps mentees explore these possibilities. This exercise is deeply empowering. When people realize that the future is not predetermined, something shifts. Suddenly, decisions stop feeling reactive. They become intentional:

“I help them see the different options, and once they see them, they can start choosing which direction they actually want to move toward.”

Creating space for confidence to grow

At the heart of Marion’s mentoring approach is something deceptively simple: listening. Rather than imposing a strict structure, she adapts to the mentee’s pace and needs. The sessions evolve organically, guided by the mentee’s ambitions, questions, and challenges: “Mentorship should serve the mentee, not the other way around.”

What she enjoys most is watching confidence emerge over time.

Often, the capabilities were already there, they simply needed space and encouragement to surface.

“Usually they had it in them all along,” Marion says. “Sometimes all it takes is a little confidence boost.”

One mentee she worked with was struggling with a big decision: whether to start her own business while keeping her current job. The dilemma wasn’t just practical but also emotional. So they explored different scenarios, risks, and personal values together. Instead of prescribing a path, Marion helped her clarify what mattered most, and the mentee eventually found her own answer.

“She sent me a picture right after registering her company at the Chamber of Commerce, she was so proud.” – Marion recalls with a smile.

Moments like that capture the real power of mentorship: helping people realize they are more capable than they thought.

Future-proofing a career in AI

For professionals looking to enter or grow within AI, Marion believes the biggest mistake is trying to follow everything. The field is evolving too quickly for that. Instead, she recommends starting with focus.

“First, determine what area you want to be in. It could be data science, ethics, governance, programming, project management, or the business side,” she says.

Once that direction is clear, the next step is to build depth: connect with the right communities, attend relevant events, and invest in learning.

Future-proofing isn’t about chasing every new development. It’s about committing to a direction and building meaningful expertise.

Designing a desirable future

Marion often ends her conversations with a thought that sounds simple but carries real weight: “The future belongs to people who follow their heart.” Not blindly, but intentionally aligning curiosity with responsibility, ambition with values, and innovation with purpose.

That mindset sits at the core of the AI4ALL Mentor Program, which exists to empower people to grow their confidence, leadership, and impact in the world of AI. Because the future of AI shouldn’t be shaped by a small group of voices. It should be built by people from diverse backgrounds who are willing to ask better questions, imagine better possibilities, and design a future that serves society.

If you want to design not just a probable future but a desirable one, applications for the next AI4ALL Mentor Program wave open April 15, 2026.
